fun fact: i love the landspeeder.
the landspeeder is probably my favourite of the un-allied technologies shown in star wars. my favourite imperial tech is always kind of a toss-up between speeder bikes and lambda shuttles, and my favourite rebel tech is the b-wing. but i also really love the landspeeder. look how battered it looks! it’s like something that MIGHT ACTUALLY EXIST!
initially they had shots of the landspeeder riding merrily along, and it *was* a vehicle with a motor on wheels that could be driven about. the initial plan was to paint away the wheels in every shot, but the colour matching was really difficult for some reason and so it looked like there was an orange glob sort of supporting the landspeeder in early drafts. they jokingly refered to it as the “force field.” these shots were scrapped, but later touched up for the special edition.
as vehicles went the landspeeder was reportedly really awful on set. at least, from Anthony Daniels’ perspective. he had to sit on the back, with no real seat (and the butt plate taken off his 3p0 suit) and recalls being jangled around quite a bit. the exhaust from the vehicle underneith sort of vented out the bodywork of the back, too, and right up 3p0’s tiny mouthplate into mr. Daniels’ face.
ITS JUST SO HIDEOUS AND 70S SCIFI AND PERFECT AND RUSTED AND MISERABLE I LOVE IT I LOVE IT AAAA
